Boost for business to make kiwi homes warmer, drier and healthier

Published: 16.06.2009

Business, local government, electricity companies and others have an opportunity to get involved in a scheme that will provide over 180,000 New Zealand households with access to grants for insulation and clean heating over the next four years, as part of a major investment in household energy efficiency.

Budget 2009 allocates $323.3 million over four years towards a programme to fit homes with insulation and clean heating devices. The scheme is open to owners and occupiers of houses built before 2000, and starts on 1 July 2009.

Government grants of up to $1,800 will be available to all New Zealanders that require ceiling & under-floor insulation and a clean heating device such as an approved log or pellet burner, flued gas heater, or heat pump.

For holders of Community Service Cards, additional Government funding will be available and this will be supplemented by the private sector reduce costs even further.

The programme aims to insulate 27,500 homes in the first year, rising to 60,500 homes by 2012/13.

Achieving this ambitious target will only be made possible by private sector partners playing an active role in the scheme through the production & installation of energy efficiency products and offering finance to households.

The programme will be delivered through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) as part of its EnergyWise programmes for homes, businesses & industry.
