Spurring innovation - 2006 Dyson Product Design Award

Published: 11.07.2006

The winner of the IPONZ-sponsored 2006 Dyson Product Design Award, and the new British Council New Zealand Product Design Ambassador, is Tauranga resident, Matt Backler.

Matt designed “N-One”, a wearable intravenous medication pump designed to give patients more comfort and freedom than some current hospital-style drips.

The 26-year-old design graduate believes N-One can be adapted for taking blood samples or conducting blood analysis before, after, or during treatment.  Matt says for some patients, N-One could mean a home-based recuperation instead of frequent hospital outpatient visits or lengthy hospital stays.

The Dyson Product Award recognises and rewards upcoming Kiwi designers whose ideas provide innovative and inspiring solutions to everyday problems.

This award was set up in 2001 by Avery Robinson, the distributors of Dyson® products in New Zealand.  It is hosted in association with the British Council New Zealand Design Ambassador Programme, Designers’ Institute of New Zealand (DINZ) and IPONZ.

The Dyson Product Design Award ceremony was gazetted by the Commissioner of Patents, Trade Marks and Designs as an “Industrial Exhibition” under the New Zealand Patents and Designs Acts in New Zealand Patent Office Journal No. 1523.
