
Meet some of our team - patents & designs

The Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand (IPONZ) has changed the formation of its Patent and Trade Mark Examination Groups, to better cater for staff development and high quality service delivery.
The teams now have Examiners, Senior Examiners and Principal Examiners. This month we’ll introduce you to some of our patent and design people. Next month we’ll introduce some of our trade mark team.

Manager – Patents & Designs
Maitland Maltby oversees the functions of the Patent and Design examination services team. He is responsible for leading and ensuring effective examination, registration and grant services. The examination services team also contributes to international and national policy setting in relation to IP systems and processes.

Principal Patent Examiners
Principal Patent Examiners are responsible for specific technology areas. In addition to examining patent and design applications, they provide advice on operational policy and practice, guidance on technical issues, and are responsible for the overall quality of patent and design examination in their areas.
Senior Patent Examiners
Senior Patent Examiners are responsible for examining patent and design applications, work allocation, quality assurance and training new examiners.
