Trade mark practice guideline amendment 2006/11 – pitau (koru)

Published: 05.12.2006

The Maori Trade Marks Advisory Committee has assessed a large number of trade marks which incorporate a koru device.

The Maori Trade Marks Advisory Committee has advised the Commissioner that where a pitau (also known as koru) appears as a device in a trade mark, it does not consider such devices to be offensive for a wide range of goods and services. This has led to the amendment of the Practice Guidelines on the Maori Trade Marks Advisory Committee and Maori Trade Marks.

A full version of the above new practice guideline is available at www.iponz.govt.nz select “Information Library” | “02. Trade Marks” | “3 Trade Mark Practice Guidelines” | “Trade Marks Act 2002”.
