Industrial allocation under the ETS

Published: 15.12.2009

The Ministry for the Environment has released a consultation document as a first step in the process of allocating emission units to industry under the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme (NZETS).

Under the NZETS, some businesses will have a legal obligation to surrender emission units, which will effectively put a price on emissions of greenhouse gases.

Emission units will be allocated to businesses carrying out activities that are emissions-intensive and trade-exposed.  To determine which firms should receive allocation, the Government wants firms to identify themselves if they are carrying out activities listed in the consultation document or any other activities that may be eligible.
