Energy Safety Intelligence (ESI) is now live

Published: 13.05.2008

Over the last year some fundamental business process changes have been taking place behind the scenes at Energy Safety (ES). The most significant of these is the development of the ES Intelligence system known as ESI (and pronounced as ‘easy’).

This is a big step for ES as, for the first time, all ES operational activities are merged into a single system.  The system is used to record all notifications of accidents and incidents, investigations, audits, and compliance activities carried out by ES.  Many of the data fields are selection-driven as opposed to free-text and this will make extraction and reporting of ES information easier and more reliable.

A new feature of ESI that will benefit both ES and our clients is the development of an online event notification form that feeds directly into the ESI system.  This is the preferred mechanism for informing ES of any gas or electricity incident or accident.  This can be found on the ES website.

Depending on the nature of the event being reported to ES, additional details may need to be supplied as per the Gas Regulations 1993 or Electricity Regulations 1997, and ES has a series of forms found on the website to facilitate this.  You will always be contacted by an ES technical officer following a notification to ES and they will indicate whether additional details are required or not.

An enhancement to the ESI system planned for later in 2008 is the development of an online reporting facility.  This will enable members of the public to directly access a subset of ES data through the running of basic pre-defined reports or building their own query.  The information available is limited via privacy constraints, but will be the equivalent level of detail as can be found in the ES annual publication Summary of Reported Gas and Electrical Accidents, however it will be extended to include notifications, audits and compliance activities.

Development of the new system and the interaction with the public via the ES website is a positive step forward for ES regarding the capture and accessibility of ES data.  Watch this space for further news on when the reporting facility is available for use.
