Energy Safety promotes awareness of LPG leak testing

Published: 10.06.2008

Energy Safety and industry are promoting awareness of the need for testing LPG appliances for leaks.

Messages to improve awareness of leak testing and the correct procedures to follow have been included on cylinder swing tags and in brochures.

Leakage from cylinder connection systems can have serious consequences with portable LPG appliances, especially as gas in the cylinder is at high pressure.  The problem can be particularly acute with LPG cabinet heaters as they are used indoors and the cylinder is near to the burner flame.

The safety message states: "After securely connecting a new or refilled cylinder, apply soapy water to the cylinder connections and turn on the cylinder. If bubbles appear you have a leak. Close the valve and call an LPG service agent."

Energy Safety recommends that consumers should not reconnect cylinders if a leakage is detected, and should engage a gasfitter or authorised service agent to check the system.
