Buying safe electrical appliances: a checklist
Published: 16.12.2008
Check the plug
The plug must be a two or three pin plug with plastic insulation on half of each of the two power pins - otherwise, the appliance is not suitable for use in New Zealand.
Check the voltage
Check the voltage marking on the appliance name plate. If it is not 230V, or a range including 230V – for instance, 220-240V - it is not suitable.
Check the instructions are in English
Appliances where the instructions do not include an English version do not meet the requirements of New Zealand’s Safety Standards and therefore could be unsafe.
Take extra care when buying a powerful power tool
If you are buying a powerful power tool, check the power rating. If it exceeds 2400 watts, the appliance must have a larger rated plug – one with larger pins. You will also need a special socket to use it safely. Your should also use a residual current device (RCD) with power tools and check the RCD functions correctly, using the test button before use every time.
