Leakage testing on larger existing installations

Published: 10.03.2009

Specific procedures for pressure testing a gas installation where the pipework volume does not exceed 30 litres can be found under Appendix D of the New Zealand Standard NZS 5261:2003, as amendment in June 2007.

Energy Safety (ES) has been approached to provide advice on leakage testing for existing installations in excess of 30 litres.  We advise to segment the installation into parts not exceeding 30 litres and apply the pressure test, set out in D6 for the prescribed five minute period.  Alternatively, where the pipe volume exceeds 30 litres, procedures in E3.1.1., Appendix E of the Australian Standard AS 5601/AG 601 2000 may be used. In these procedures the test period is extended by five minutes for every additional 30 litres or part thereof.  These procedures carry further guidance notes that must be observed.
