Guidelines for voluntary recalls of unsafe products

Published: 08.09.2009

It is in everyones interest to make sure unsafe electrical and gas products are removed from use.

Unsafe products put people at risk, which may result in serious injury, and the supplier may be held responsible.

General advice on how to conduct a voluntary recall can be found on the Ministry of Consumer Affairs website

As part of that process you would notify Energy Safety.  We ask that you do so as early as possible, please, and provide the following additional information:

  • How the fault was noticed.
  • The total number of units held in stock.
  • The total number of units supplied.
  • The total number of units sold.
  • An assessment of the number of units presenting fault and how this assessment was made.
  • Supporting compliance documentation.  Approval certificate and/or supplier declaration, if required.
  • If you are not the manufacturer, the manufacturers details
  • Any other brands the unit may be supplied under, if known.
  • In addition to a copy of the recall notice, a detailed recall plan. The plan should clearly state what the aims of the recall are and how it will achieve those aims.
  • Any other relevant information.
