Safety message: “Power tower” incident highlights need for regular safety checks

Published: 10.11.2009

“Power towers” (pop-up Epods or multiple electrical socket devices) are common in office environments and commercial premises.

A recent electrical shock accident occurred when a power lead for a laptop was plugged into such a device.  It appears that the top of the power tower came away from its mounting screws resulting in the person using the unit receiving an electric shock. As a result of the incident the company involved had all of the units disconnected from service, and engaged the services of an electrical engineer to revise the design.

This incident highlights the importance of safety in design, as well as the need to perform regular safety checks on electrical fittings and equipment.
