Safety message: Keep safe when insulating

Published: 10.11.2009

A recent spate of fires in Australia has highlighted the importance of taking care when installing insulation, or electrical equipment, in ceiling spaces.

All electrical equipment must be able to cool itself. Otherwise it will overheat, which may result in a fire.

Thermal insulation installed in ceilings must never be installed so that it covers electrical equipment such as down lights or lighting transformers.

Equally, electrical equipment must not be installed under thermal insulation unless it is specially designed for the purpose.

Maintaining separation distances is also important to allow cooling to take place. Never allow insulation to touch, or be near to, electrical equipment.

When installing insulation in confined spaces, particular care must be taken to avoid contact with electricity. In a confined space electric shocks are more often fatal, as the person receiving the shock is not able to easily disconnect themselves from the power source.
