Broadband Investment Fund feedback sought by 30 June
Published: 10.06.2008
A key plank of the Government's recent Budget statement was that over $500 million was announced to provide better broadband - a strategic priority for economic growth.
The core of the new funding is $250 million over five years for urban fibre projects, $75 million over five years for rural projects and $15 million to promote the establishment of a further trans-Tasman fibre optic cable.
The additional funding will largely be allocated via a constable grants programme to be administered by the Ministry of Economic Development. A consultation document detailing the draft criteria for the contestable grants was published as part of the Budget announcement - it is available on the Ministry’s website.
The Government is seeking feedback on the draft funding criteria and the proposed application process for the Broadband Investment Fund announced in the Budget by 30 June 2008.
Once this feedback, both from written submissions and stakeholder meetings, has been received and analysed, the Government will release the final funding criteria and initiate the next step in the process for the first funding round.
It is expected that the first allocation of funding for new projects under the Broadband Investment Fund should occur in the 2008/09 financial year.
