Initial decision made for digital TV switchover
Published: 09.02.2010
In December 2009, Cabinet made the initial decisions necessary to allow planning to go ahead for the switchover to fully digital television broadcasting in New Zealand. The date for “digital switchover” (DSO) has not been finalised, but is expected to be in 2013-2015.
DSO will allow spectrum to be freed up for new uses, as digital television technology uses the spectrum more efficiently than analogue technology. The Government has decided what spectrum to designate for digital television, and what will be freed up for new uses, including the 4G mobile broadband services. The next step is to do technical planning work for both television spectrum licensing and the new cellular services band.
