Allocation of additional FM licences

Published: 06.03.2007

In July 2006 the Government agreed to reserve licences for local commercial use. These licences are to be allocated by auction, but restricted to new entrants for local broadcasting purposes consistent with the objectives in the Regional and Community Broadcasting Policy Framework.

The Cabinet decision also noted that policies for local commercial broadcasting will need to be developed to ensure that ongoing use and ownership of these licences will be constrained so as to reflect the original allocation objective.

In conjunction with the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, MED is developing draft criteria and conditions for the allocation of local commercial frequencies. MED is also developing the technical details required for the additional licences.

The draft criteria are expected to be published on the Ministry’s website in the near future. Cabinet decisions and other material on VHF-FM broadcasting: Frequency Availability and Allocation are already available.
